Pharmacy technicians in North Dakota ought to be registered with the “North Dakota Board of Pharmacy” to practice. However, in order to fulfill the eligibility criteria, the aspiring pharmacy technicians need to complete certain mandatory educational requirements.

Training Requirements

The minimum requirements to practice as a pharmacy technician in North Dakota are as follows:

  • The applicant must complete a pharmacy technician program from American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited institute; or
  • The applicant must complete on job training program at an organization accredited by the ASHP for a year. However, the provision expires after a year and needs a request made in writing by the pharmacist in-charge at the pharmacy in North Dakota.

Certification Requirements

In addition to the qualification requirements, the candidate also requires certification before initiating practice. The certification requirement was enforced from 1st January 2011.  Currently, the pharmacy technicians in North Dakota can only obtain national certification by Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Upon entering the workforce, the pharmacy technician must have the certificate along with the registration card ready for display to the public at the pharmacy of employment.

How to Register As a Pharmacy Technician in North Dakota

The candidate can apply for the registration/license for pharmacy technician after ensuring that all the requirements have been met. To become a practicing pharmacy technician in North Dakota, you will have to submit the following:

  • Completely and accurately filled Registration Application form;
  • A couple of latest 2×3 photographs;
  • A copy of the official certificate obtained from PTCB
  • Annual registration fee of $35

The applicant must be at least 18 years of age and should have either GED or high school diploma. Additionally, the renewal of registration has to be done on annual basis. The expiry date of the registration is 1st March, and if an applicant crosses this deadline, an increased fee equal to $45 will have to be paid. Upon registration, the Board of Pharmacy will provide the technician with a registration card bearing a unique registration number and an identification card. If the registered pharmacy technician changes address, the new address must be notified to the board within fifteen days so that the records can be updated. The registered pharmacy technician must wear a badge that clearly lists the title. Furthermore, the technician should give the professional identification on all on-duty telephonic conversations.

There are several renowned accredited Colleges of Pharmacy in North Dakota that provide pharmacy technician education and training. The State of North Dakota does not impose the requirement of job training before initiating the practice. However, upon recruitment pharmacists make the hired individuals undergo a training program to make sure that the technicians are able to fulfill the job requirements.
